Eyelash extensions have become an extremely popular beauty treatment; however, extensions can also be bothersome and expensive. LATISSE® is an FDA-approved treatment that can be prescribed to help your natural lashes grow thicker, longer, and darker.

What Is LATISSE®?

LATISSE® is the brand name for a substance known as bimatoprost ophthalmic solution. This solution was originally used as a treatment for glaucoma. However, many patients reported that their lashes began to grow thicker and fuller while using the medication. In 2008, LATISSE® was approved by the FDA to be used to improve the appearance of the eyelashes.

LATISSE® works by extending the growth phase of the eyelashes while also increasing the number of lashes that grow at one time. You apply it yourself to the base of the lashes on your upper eyelid once a day.

How Long Until I See Results?

Most patients begin to see thicker, longer lashes in two to four weeks, and optimal results in 12 to 16 weeks. While the results may not be instantaneous, LATISSE® is improving the look of your natural eyelashes, so you don’t have to worry about ruining your extensions or having to get them redone.

Are There Any Risks or Side Effects?

Most people who use LATISSE® do not report any side effects. Some patients have experienced a slight darkening of the eyelid skin and sometimes the iris, but these effects are rare.

Because bimatoprost solutions were initially designed for glaucoma treatment, you should let Dr. Hotchandani know if you are already undergoing treatment for an eye pressure condition. He will review the risks and side effects with you in more detail during your consultation appointment. He will also make sure that you are a good candidate and that you understand the instructions for use.

It is recommended that you continue the use of LATISSE® if you want to maintain the improved appearance of your lashes. If you stop using the product, your lashes will gradually return to their natural state.
