What is CoolSculpting®?
The concept for CoolSculpting® started with a frozen treat. In the 1970s, renowned Harvard University scientists Dr. Dieter Manstein and Dr. R. Rox Anderson saw that some children got dimples in their cheeks due to eating popsicles. This was the first observation of the relationship between cold and fat.
The CoolSculpting® treatment was born from the insight that cold can selectively affect and eliminate fat cells without damaging the skin or surrounding tissue.
How does the treatment work?
This is one of the key questions everybody typically asks. When we apply CoolSculpting® to the targeted unwanted fat cells, the cold targets the fat and kills them. Once those fat cells are killed, they are naturally eliminated from the body. And then, after 1 to 3 months, the treated fat cells are gone, never to return.
How long does it last?
CoolSculpting® visibly reduces fat layer thickness after a single treatment, and it has long-lasting results—up to 9 years post-treatment. The CoolSculpting® procedure has a high patient satisfaction rate. The best results are seen at 2 to 3 months after treatment, but some patients have noticed their results sooner.
One of the most important questions we hear is “How long does it last?” When you reach adolescence, you’ve reached the maximum number of fat cells you’ll have for the rest of your life. Think of it this way, when you gain and lose weight, those fat cells don’t multiply; they just get bigger and smaller. So, as long as you maintain your weight with your normal diet and exercise, your results should last. We always tell our patients, protect your investment! What areas can be treated?
CoolSculpting® is FDA cleared for 8 areas of the body and has been shown to safely and effectively reduce subcutaneous fat in the flank, abdomen, thigh, submental area, back, bra area, underneath the buttocks (banana roll), and upper arm.
What does the treatment feel like – will it hurt?
On your treatment day, a vacuum applicator is applied to the area, which basically feels like a strong suction. You may feel pulling, tugging, or mild pinching. The cold sensation will typically subside within 10 minutes, as the area becomes numb from the controlled cooling.
Many people ask if this hurts. Our staff has all had treatment and the best way to describe it is strange, but definitely not painful.
