What to Expect

Results may be noticed right away and improve with time, though there may be slight swelling immediately after the procedure. In pivotal clinical trials, EVLA has an outstanding record of success with virtually no recurrence of vein congestion and attractive cosmetic outcomes. In some cases, follow-up procedures including other techniques such as phlebectomy or sclerotherapy may be necessary to achieve desired results.

How Does it Work?

A small medical laser fiber is inserted through a needle stick into the incompetent vein, and the VenaCure^® laser precisely delivers pulses of highly concentrated laser energy at just the right wavelength to just the right tissue to cause the vein to collapse and seal shut. The body immediately adapts and re-routes blood through healthy veins to establish normal return blood flow.

Patient Experience

EVLA is performed on an outpatient basis (return home the same day) in less than two hours. A local anesthetic is used to numb the treatment area, and while there may be an unfamiliar sensation during the procedure, there is usually negligible pain. Regular activities may be resumed immediately (allow 10 days to two weeks before any strenuous activity), and patients may wear a compression stocking for about one week.

Is Endovenous Laser Ablation painful?

A local anesthetic, usually lidocaine unless the patient is allergic, is used to de-sensitize the treatment area and the procedure itself is comfortable. There will be little to no discomfort for the first week after the procedure. Any minor discomfort may be remedied with over-the-counter pain medication as recommended.

Does Endovenous Laser Ablation leave scars?

The procedure involves laser energy being delivered inside the vein, which is why it is called ENDOvenous ablation, and entry points are sufficiently small such that they do not require stitches and merely leave barely noticeable puncture mark scars.

What is the recovery time I should expect?

You may resume normal activities immediately. Rigorous exercise and other high impact activities should be limited for two weeks, and you may be asked to wear a compression stocking for about a week to prevent recurrence.

Are lasers safe?

Laser technology has been used safely in a multitude of medical procedures including eye correction and dermatology for several years. Temporary blisters and/or pigmentation changes resulting from excessive energy levels have occurred using lasers for laser hair removal and skin conditions, but since Endovenous Ablation involves insertion of the laser fiber into the vein, there is no risk of blistering and pigmentation changes unless the vein is superficial. The most common injuries caused by lasers are eye related. Use of eye protection is required and the wealth of Hotchandani Laser & Vein Center experience using lasers limits risk.

Will insurance cover the procedure?

Hotchandani Laser, Vein and Cosmetic Surgery no longer bills insurance companies or government insurance programs. You may be able to arrange reimbursement yourself, and one of our professionals will work with you to provide direction on how to get started with that process.
